Teens Ending Abusive Relationships
(The T.E.A.R. Program)

February 4th–8th, 2008 "National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week."

The T.E.A.R. program is designed to address the issue of violence and abuse in teenage dating relationships. Violence among women has become an epidemic in recent years. This violence begins early, often in the teen years when both genders are beginning to sort out what romantic relationships are all about. One out of three teens experience abuse in their relationships before reaching adulthood. Abused teens are at risk of becoming the battered adult victim in the future.

The T.E.A.R. program has three objectives:

  1. To increase awareness on the nature, causes and effects of abusive relationships.
  2. To provide individual counseling and referral assistance to students who self identify as victims or abusers in dating relationships.
  3. To provide ongoing support group for victims.

The presentation component of the T.E.A.R. program is a 1-2 hour interactive, educational session on teen dating violence. The presentation consist of a video, open discussion, handouts and a variety of activities. The presentation is designed to help students work towards the following objectives:

·         To be able to recognize the different types of abusive behaviors and understand that the behavior is unacceptable.

·         To understand that abuse is a learned behavior.

·         To recognize the cycle of abuse.

·         To begin to question the myths that promote unhealthy, unequal relationships.

·         To learn how and where to get help if they or someone they know needs it.

Following the presentation, those students who request to speak with a counselor about a dating or domestic violence situation, will be given an opportunity to do so. If there is a need Harbor House is willing to implement a teen dating support group in the school. All the services which Harbor House provides are free to the students.

Demeaning, disrespectful, and violent attitudes toward women are underlying causes of other major societal ills such as school violence, community violence and crime. Every coach (and mentor) is in a position that allows him to directly influence the attitudes of his athletes and to help eliminate the disrespectful perceptions of women and girls that are at the heart of such tragic problems. The Coaching Boys into Men Playbook provides coaching tips, advice and useful anecdotes from great coaches and players to help other coaches take the issue of violence against women and girls head on.
